Long-time readers here know WFD well. We’ve been around now for 10 years after all! But I have seen some new folks pop in lately and I thought maybe we’d talk about what WFD is all about and perhaps inspire some new folks to contribute!
The first diary to use the tag "what's for dinner" was posted on Tue. July 4th, 2006.
Fourth of July - What's For Dinner Tonight?
This was followed by the first official use in the title as we have become accustomed to: What's for Dinner? Episode 1.1
And from that point on we saw regular Saturday postings of WFD by various dedicated posters.
Every Saturday evening (or afternoon depending on your timezone) we gather here and share recipes, tips, or just good old food p0rn at our virtual table. Why? Because food is something that brings us all together, I suppose. We have a community of progressive Democrats that love to talk about politics but every now and then you gotta eat! I was amazed when I first discovered these diaries at just how many “foodies” we have here!
The amazing food diaries from Patric Juillet aka Asinus Asinum Fricat got me hooked, and then under Cordelia Lear’s management I started contributing diaries to What’s for Dinner and found myself becoming more and more involved in keeping things going. For quite a while when I was too busy working blueoregon kept us going. While people have come and gone over the years we have some pretty regular writers and commenters who look forward to our virtual table every week.
We’ve had diaries all about equipment, like say cast iron or pressure cookers, as well as cooking techniques like fondue or crock pot cooking. We’ve shared our favorite internet websites as well as our treasured family recipes.
So if you have a good recipe to share, or maybe want to discuss in depth a certain food item or history we welcome new contributions. It’s nice to have a few pics but not necessary so if you’ve been hesitant about writing a WFD diary please rest assured it can be anything from a quick recipe to a long essay full of history and links. What’s important is gathering together and sharing our mutual enjoyment of food.
What are you having for dinner tonight? Please join us at the table and enjoy!
